How to buy cheap tickets and outsmart low-cost airlines?

Effective booking of tickets with low-cost airlines requires cunning and patience. Some take hours, others even days. On the other side, there is an efficient system, which is often ahead of our steps, which unfortunately causes us to overpay.

It is worth outsmarting cheap airlines, because there is a good chance that we will fly to Moscow for USD 0.01, to London for USD 3, and USD 4 to Milan. Before the holidays, we advise you on how to do it on legal basis.

Low cost airlines are cheap until we start booking a ticket. When all fees are added to the price - from luggage, through taxes, airport taxes, booking fees, legroom, up to the check-in fee - it suddenly turns out that the ticket is not much cheaper than the one bought on the cruise lines. It happens that it is even more expensive, but in the pre-holiday euphoria we will not even check it, because the initial PLN 39 or 15 will tempt us.

Racial seekers of cheap tickets know how to save up to several hundred zlotys when booking a ticket. They have ways to fly abroad several times a year, spending pennies on it. However, it requires perseverance, cleverness and discipline.

Try several times
I go to the low cost website and search for a flight from Warsaw to Madrid. The price is displayed, for example, USD 150, I click on this flight and in the same second the flight is more expensive by several dozen zlotys. It is not a booking fee, because I have not chosen any option yet and I have "USD 0" as the booking fee. This is a trap that people who use low-cost airlines often find themselves caught.

In scheduled lines, you can click on a flight several times for several days and nothing will change. In cheap airlines, the low price catches the eye and we quickly start booking. We rarely notice that something changes. So what to do to make the ticket still cost USD 150? First, you need to search for the flight again. Re-entry to the site also usually helps. You can also wait several minutes. If the price is still going up, check your flight in a few hours or do it the next day. Often the option to switch to the other lines page for a while also works.

W " time of booking

Ticket prices on low cost airlines' websites can change even several times a day. Therefore, it is very important what time we check them. Prices keep jumping just before the weekend, because it is known that then fewer people work, so more time to plan trips and book flights. The departments responsible for airline ticket prices in airline companies are also closed on weekends. Ticket prices also go up in the evening for the same reason.

Two years ago, ticket prices were definitely cheaper at night. According to specialists, currently the best promotions happen during the day, so it's best to look for them from 8 am to 6 pm. This is of course the job for the persistent. "Sometimes promotional tickets will be released on Monday at 1pm and sometimes on Friday at 6:30 pm," explains Hubert Olender of Fly4Free.

There is no rule here, so it's worth checking ticket prices several times a day and just chatting for the occasion. One thing is certain: "The more time we spend looking for a ticket, the better price we get," emphasizes Olender.

Don't give away the date
While the best time to book a ticket cannot be specified, there is a rule for choosing the date. If we want to buy a cheap ticket, do not enter the exact date in the search engine. In 90 percent. cases, the ticket will "jump", because since we give the date, we are theoretically determined for it. A great solution is to enter the date even two weeks earlier and click "further" until we get to the one that interests us.

This problem does not exist if the airlines display a monthly flight calendar. However, the vast majority of low-cost airlines display the three or four closest dates of the flight they are searching for on their website.

Of course, if the price jumps at the time of clicking, we run the system to search again, click again, and so on, until we fall past the page. If it locks up at a high price, you can of course try to check the flight from a different computer.

Most airlines require logging in to the personal user account of a given portal. According to some purebred ticket seekers, logging in before entering the date also affects the price of tickets, because the airline's website remembers the most frequently chosen destinations. Therefore, it is best to log in only at the last required moment.

Booking multiple tickets
Some airlines have an option displayed on how many tickets of the cheaper option are left. For example, if we need five tickets, and it is displayed that three tickets are left for USD 40, and the rest cost USD 70, then we can be sure that all tickets will be charged to us at a higher price. - It's best to break the deal in two. Book three tickets in the cheaper option and five in the normal option. Then we can be sure that no one will raise the price - suggests Olender.

The solution is also to check the flight in a day or two, when more tickets are unlocked in the cheaper option.

Privilege cards
We have two of the largest low-cost carriers in Poland: Ryanair and Wizzair. Airlines offer special credit cards with which you can minimize ticket prices while avoiding booking fees. In the case of Ryanair, it is USD 25.50 for each passenger for each section of the journey, in the case of Wizzair it is USD 27.

It is not difficult to calculate that in the case of two people, an additional USD 100 is charged for a return flight. Ryanair offers a Mastercard PrePaid that anyone can have, but requires a pre-transfer. For Wizzair, this is a Mastercard credit card, so the applicant must have a steady income.

By plane, train or coach - the fastest and cheapest way to get home?
Of course, there is an option to borrow a card from friends or family. The most profitable option is to buy such a card for a company, because you can pay with it without restrictions. Internet users on various forums related to flying also offer help with payments. It also pays off for them, because for each booked flight you get points that can be used, for example, for the next booking.

- It is really profitable, because if we have a change, it turns out that suddenly the ticket costs as much as a scheduled flight - observes Hubert Olender. It's just that on the cruise lines we have luggage and usually a meal included in the price.

Addicted to flying
For those addicted to flying and traveling, of course, we recommend chatting for all discounts and promotions on the low cost airlines' websites. There is no shortage of them and they are definitely profitable.

- The cheapest tickets I remember were the flights for 1 usd to Malta sold by Ryanair in 2022. Now there are also such promotions. Wizzair has just sold tickets from Warsaw to Stavanger in Norway for USD 8 return. You could also fly to Budapest for 8 usd, to Oslo - Torp for 3 usd, or from Katowice to Milan for 4 usd - lists Olender. - Ryanair recently had a special promotion. For two hours it was possible to buy tickets from Krakow to Budapest for USD 0.01 - he adds.

One thing is certain: if you dream of cheap flights around the world, it is worth spending some time and cleverness on the search.
